Lane Departure Mitigation
How does it work?
This technology consists of the identification of limits or edges where the vehicle travels on the road, and constantly returns the vehicle to within these limits if the system is active. These markings on the road are what allow it to operate. Generally, prior to this function being activated, a warning alert in the form of a sound, vibration or light, is given and if it is not responded to by the driver, the technology gently brings the vehicle back into the lane.
Pros
- Its level of autonomy is useful for long trips, especially in rural areas.
- Versions of this technology provide warnings when cars or obstacles are near the road.
Cons
- It depends on the environmental conditions for its operation such as rain, fog and snow.
- Its effectiveness varies according to the state of the road, especially when lane markings are obscured.

- Crash modification factors of rumble strips on horizontal curves of two-lane rural roads: A propensity scores potential outcomes approachby Tanveer Ahmed on November 10, 2023 at 11:00 am
Horizontal curves are known to be more crash-prone than tangent sections particularly with respect to roadway departure crashes. Rumble strips are an effective countermeasure to mitigate various types of roadway departure crashes. While existing studies on the safety effectiveness of rumble strips have primarily used before-after study designs or cross-sectional methods for crash modification factor (CMF) estimation, these methods often suffer from imbalanced datasets and larger standard errors,...
- Identifying roadway departure crash patterns on rural two-lane highways under different lighting conditions: Association knowledge using data mining approachby Ahmed Hossain on June 18, 2023 at 10:00 am
INTRODUCTION: More than half of all fatalities on U.S. highways occur due to roadway departure (RwD) each year. Previous research has explored various risk factors that contribute to RwD crashes, however, a comprehensive investigation considering the effect of lighting conditions has been insufficiently addressed.
- On the impact of advanced driver assistance systems on driving distraction and risky behaviour: An empirical analysis of irish commercial driversby Leandro Masello on January 25, 2023 at 11:00 am
Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) present promising benefits in mitigating road collisions. However, these benefits are limited when risky drivers continue engaging in distraction events. While there is evidence that real-time warnings help improve driving behaviour, the sustained benefits of warning-based ADAS on reducing driving distraction in light commercial vehicle (LCV) drivers remain unclear. This research determines the effect of receiving instant distraction warnings over two...
