Collision Statistics in Canada
During 2023, the most recent year for which traffic collision data are available from Transport Canada’s National Collision Database (NCDB), there were 1,964 fatalities and 9,261 seriously injured people requiring hospitalization as a result of traffic collisions. Compared to 2020, the number of fatalities increased 12% while serious injuries went up 16%. Relative to 2018, 2020 had 10% fewer fatalities and 18% fewer serious injuries. These changes may reflect the reduction in fatalities and serious injuries during the COVID 19 pandemic and the return to a pre-pandemic level.
The number of fatalities per billion vehicle kilometres traveled in 2023 was 4.5 and for total injuries, it was 274. Compared to 2022, these rates were 4% lower for both fatalities and injuries. Compared to 2020, these 2023 rates were 2% and 6% higher respectively.
