Abstract:<\/h2>\nBackground:<\/h3>\n
The WHO (2012) reported around 285 million people worldwide withat least some level of vision impairment, of which 39 million are blind. In Italy,362,000 individuals are blind and 1,500,000 experience low vision problems (ISTAT, 2013). For these individuals, moving from one place to another can be hard.<\/p>\n
Aims:<\/h3>\n
A better understanding of their mobility patterns is necessary (Liu et al., 2012) to develop strategies to improve the mobility of this population group. It is important to note that projects to improve the mobility of blind or visually impaired people, as well as other road users with disabilities, will not only help this population group but it will also contribute to increase road safety in general (UN, 2016),hence the relevance of this study.<\/p>\n
Methods:<\/h3>\n
In order to gather information, a questionnaire has been administered to 106 subjects registered in the Association of Blind People of Monza, a province in Northern Italy, in February 2019. The questionnaire was composed by 42 questions divided into three different sections: demographic information, use of public transport or transport social services and use of the road as a pedestrian.<\/p>\n
Results:<\/h3>\n
Sixty-two percent of the sample is aged 31 to 65 years old, 26% is over 65, and 15% is under 30. Eighty percent of the sample uses public transport but 52% declared feeling unsafe while using public transport. The main stated reasons are the difficulty to identify the location of the station and understand the position of the vehicles while en route. Ninety percent of the sample declared to walk around their living area, of which 61% unaccompanied. Thirty-eight percent reported feeling unsafe walking alone, in particular deciding where and when to cross the road, as well as while crossing the road.<\/p>\n
Discussion:<\/h3>\n
These combined results suggest a difficulty in spatial perception experienced by the subjects. The data will thus be analyzed further to understand what can be done to improve the subjects\u2019 spatial perception while on the road, therefore improving their mobility.<\/p>\n
Conclusions:<\/h3>\n
One or more of the possible solutions will then be financed by the Rotary International Clubs Monza-Villa Reale.<\/p>\n
