The work that we do allows us to gather statistical information (age, sex, number of prior offences, marital status and dependants) from impaired drivers. We gather this information for both first offenders and repeat offenders. I would appreciate the opportunity to share not only our statistical information with conference attendees but also our personal experiences with this clientele in order to change the perceived idea of an offender. Our program is for offenders but this presentation would be directed at CARSP Members and conference attendees. We offer an educational program, in exchange for a negotiated sentence (not a withdrawal of charges) in court. Our clients MUST have approval of the crown prosecutor in order to be eligible to participate. My goal with this presentation is to share my findings and experiences about offenders in the hope that what I bring to the table allows attendees to get a deeper understanding of WHO is offending. We see nurses, firefighters, police officers, lawyers, accountants more than we see the unemployed. Not all of our clients are alcoholics, some are young and foolish, some have just retired and find themselves with more social time. Many of our clients had other drugs in their system at time of arrest but as soon as a positive breath sample is taken - we are not looking any further. I would also like to share that recovery is possible. That change is real. What I take away from this conference I bring back to my clients to open their eyes about how many people are dedicated to road safety. I know I struggled a little last year with my presentation and my nerves but if you don't try, you'll never succeed!<\/p>\n
