They are touted as having significant safety benefits. However, as long as a human have some role in driving, i.e., the foreseeable future, the extent of safety benefits remains speculative. This paper outlines important, yet largely overlooked, challenges that relate to fundamental human-machine symbiosis and that arise from a lack of a consistent and rationalized marketplace. Moreover, with the advent of a ubiquitous, digital, interconnected society, future vehicles will become closely coupled and interact within a system of technical, social and organizational subsystems as well as a multitude of economy- and entertainment-based systems, posing new challenges with significant safety implications. There is an urgent need to consider how to address these emerging challenges.
