Crash Modification Factors (CMFs) are used as a means to evaluate the expected number of
\ncollisions after implementing a given countermeasure at a specific site. To date, there have
\nbeen numerous studies on CMFs in relation to motor vehicle accidents and roadway features.
\nAs more municipalities incorporate active transportation networks into their infrastructure
\nplanning, it is important to develop CMFs as a tool to help agencies evaluate the potential safety
\nimprovements of various cycling infrastructure treatments while also considering the capital cost
\nto implement these treatments. Separated cycling facilities achieved the greatest reduction in
\ncollision rates, though these types of installations are typically more expensive to implement.
\nLess-expensive on-road installation options such as on-road bike lanes or \u201csharrows\u201d still result
\nin a significant reduction in collision rates.<\/p>\n
