{"id":20718,"date":"2022-11-11T16:55:21","date_gmt":"2022-11-11T16:55:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carsp.ca\/?p=20718"},"modified":"2022-12-08T16:48:04","modified_gmt":"2022-12-08T16:48:04","slug":"carsp-conference-awards-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carsp.ca\/en\/news\/member-news\/carsp-conference-awards-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"CARSP Conference Awards \u2013 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"By Alan German, Road Safety Research<\/p>\n<p>At the 2022 CARSP Conference, held from June 19th\u00a0 to the 21st\u00a0 in Sudbury, Ontario, lifetime achievement awards were presented to two CARSP members.\u00a0 Awards were also given for the best papers presented at the conference, and to the winners of the student paper and poster competitions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lifetime Achievement Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dainius J. Dalmotas\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20719 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/carsp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/dainius.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"75\" height=\"105\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following graduation in Mechanical Engineering from Sir George Williams University, Dainius joined the Crashworthiness Division of Transport Canada\u2019s Road Safety and Motor Vehicle Regulation Directorate.\u00a0 Throughout his working career, and beyond, he has been a fervent advocate of a data-driven approach to vehicle safety and has expended considerable effort in integrating real-world collision data with the results obtained from crash-testing programmes.\u00a0 He has conducted collaborative research with several international agencies and is the author of many technical reports and scientific papers.\u00a0 He has received several prestigious awards, including the US Government Award\u00a0for Safety Engineering Excellence in 1996, an Award of Excellence for An Outstanding Contribution to\u00a0Transportation in Canada in 1997 and, most recently, the Arnold W. Siegel International Transportation Safety\u00a0Award for 2019.\u00a0 Dainius has sponsored student paper competitions in both Canada and the US, including a Vehicle Safety Enhancement Award offered in conjunction with the CARSP Conference, with the intention of promoting further vehicle safety research among a new generation of road safety professionals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Geni B. Bahar <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20720 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/carsp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Geni.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"112\" height=\"164\" \/>Geni is a graduate of Civil Engineering at Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology.\u00a0 Over the past 40 years, she has worked globally as a traffic safety engineering expert, project manager, principal investigator, and trainer.\u00a0 Geni is certified as a Road Safety Professional, Level 2, Infrastructure.\u00a0 Her specific areas of\u00a0 expertise include: policy development, pedestrian studies, community traffic studies, value engineering, safety management and network screening, safety reviews and audits.\u00a0 She has participated in a number of national and international safety committees and project teams.\u00a0 Notable contributions include the production of FHWA\u2019s <em>Safety Analyst<\/em>,<\/p>\n<p>AASHTO\u2019s highly influential <em>Highway Safety Manual<\/em>, and the development of course and<\/p>\n<p>training materials such as MTO\u2019s <em>The Science of Highway Safety<\/em>.\u00a0 Geni has memberships in several professional associations including being a Fellow of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).\u00a0 In 2007, the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) and Transport Canada named Geni as the Transportation Person of the Year.\u00a0 Geni is a current member of CARSP\u2019s Editorial Committee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Charles H. Miller Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s award for the best technical paper presented at the conference went to <strong>Stephanie Cowle, Pamela Fuselli, Fahra Rajabali and Ian Pike<\/strong>, for their paper entitled: <em>The Cost of Transport Injuries in Canada<\/em>. Given that injury is an important cause of death for Canadians, the authors analyzed the major causes of injury for emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and deaths in 2018 using an incidence-costing, human- capital approach.\u00a0 Cases with transport incidents as an external cause of injury were identified and the results presented by age group, sex, and transport type.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mavis Johnson Traffic Safety Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The award for the best paper in the conference\u2019s policy and practice stream was presented to <strong>Douglas J. Miller award on behalf of Stephanie Cowle)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Paper and Poster Winners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-20727\" src=\"https:\/\/carsp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/20220620_205631-scaled-e1668185646540-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carsp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/20220620_205631-scaled-e1668185646540-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carsp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/20220620_205631-scaled-e1668185646540-1024x749.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/carsp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/20220620_205631-scaled-e1668185646540-768x562.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carsp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/20220620_205631-scaled-e1668185646540-1536x1123.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/carsp.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/20220620_205631-scaled-e1668185646540-2048x1497.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>L:R\u00a0 Alia Galal, Michael Stewart , Robert Colonna (Young Professionals\u2019 Committee),<\/p>\n<p>Yifan Wang and Qiangqiang Shangguan<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Paper Competition <\/strong>\u2013 This year\u2019s winner of the student paper competition was <strong>Michael Stewart <\/strong>of the University of New Brunswick, for his paper, co-authored by Eric Hildebrand, entitled: <em>The Impact of Different Road Characteristics on Lane Keeping Performance<\/em>.\u00a0 This study evaluated different pavement marking schemes and road shoulder types under various light and weather conditions to identify those combinations where vehicle-based Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) technologies were no longer able to discern the edges of travel lanes and thus were unable to warn distracted or inattentive drivers.\u00a0 The results suggested that\u00a0to achieve high percentages of LKA engagement under real-world conditions, the performance thresholds that are currently specified for road surface contrast ratio and retroreflectivity should be raised.<\/p>\n<p>2nd\u00a0 place \u2013 <strong>Qiangqiang Shangguan<\/strong>, University of Waterloo - <em>A Proactive Lane-changing\u00a0<\/em><em>Risk Prediction Framework Considering Driving Intention Recognition<\/em><\/p>\n<p>3rd\u00a0 place \u2013 <strong>Tate HubkaRao<\/strong>, University of Calgary - <em>Elementary school traffic calming: A Modified\u00a0 Stepped-Wedge Randomized Clinical Trial<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Poster Competition <\/strong>\u2013 The winner of the student poster competition was <strong>Alia Galal <\/strong>from the University of Toronto.\u00a0 The poster, co-authored by Birsen Donmez and Matthew Roorda, was entitled: <em>Improving truck driver and vulnerable road user interactions through driver training: A subject matter expert interview study<\/em>.\u00a0 Interviews were conducted with novice and experienced truck drivers, truck driver trainees (non-licensed), and road safety professionals to obtain their views on conventional training programmes, simulator training, hazard anticipation skills, hazardous scenarios between trucks and VRU\u2019s, and to capture truck driver recommendations.\u00a0\u00a0 The use of a truck simulator, incorporating more driving scenarios for training, and more on-road practice during training, were strongly endorsed.
