Today marks the National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims in Canada. The 300 members of the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals together with our colleagues in road safety across the country stand in solidarity as we pay tribute the thousands of Canadian victims and families touched by these tragedies.<\/p>\n

\u201cPreventing serious injuries and deaths on our streets, roads and highways is our collective responsibility,\u201d says Jennifer Kroeker-Hall, Vice President of the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals. \u201cWe should all do what we can to raise awareness, and avoid the actions behind the wheel that put us, our passengers and pedestrians at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

On average, five Canadians are killed in road collisions every day. Many more are seriously injured or are indirectly affected by the death or maiming of loved ones. In the past 50 years, more Canadians have died on our roads than were killed in both world wars.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we were to put down our mobile devices while driving, drive at a speed that is within the speed limit and appropriate for road conditions, wear our seat belts, place our children in properly-fitted child restraints for vehicles, and avoid driving when fatigued or impaired, we could significantly reduce the number of deaths and injuries from traffic collisions. The fact is that almost all of these deaths and injuries are preventable,\u201d says Kroeker-Hall.<\/p>\n

Given this fact, and that today is a national day for remembering and honouring those who died from motor vehicle crashes, CARSP challenges Canadians to renew their commitment to do all that they can to prevent motor vehicle injuries and deaths.<\/p>\n
