Twenty-five (25) are now certified as RSP Level 2 and eight (8) are certified in both specialties (Infrastructure and Behavioural)!\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

At the completion of the cycle of exams in February 2026, there were <\/span>1,509 certified RSP Level 1 and 259 certified RSP Level 2 professionals<\/b> worldwide. The growth in recognition of professional certification in our field is reaching far, with professionals holding the RSP Level 1 certification, outside Canada and USA, in Australia, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Japan, Jordan, New Zealand, Qatar, Saudia Arabia and UAE.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NEW: 1 PDH Hour in Ethics Training<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

A key aspect of the TPCB certifications is the renewal process every three years. The renewal process ensures that, as an example, RSP2s (infrastructure) maintain good standing in the transportation profession and continue to enhance their knowledge of the technology and scientific principles related to the practice of infrastructure road safety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Renewal is granted for a three-year period upon written application showing evidence in a form acceptable to the TPCB that the applicant has engaged in at least 45 Professional Development Hours (PDH) and accompanied by the renewal fee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beginning with the 2027 renewal cycle, 1 PDH hour in ethics training will be required for each three-year renewal cycle. Ethics training means general ethics training, not specifically engineering ethics, for non-P.E., PTP, and RSP certificants. ITE \/ TPCB will offer a free ethics webinar annually.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next Cycle of Exams<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The next two cycles of exams, still open for applications, will take place in October 2026 and February 2027. Applications for the two cycles must be received by July 20, 2026 and November 20, 2026 respectively. <\/span><\/p>\n

NEW: RSP2A Certification<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The TPCB Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve the development of a new certification which is for road safety auditors. As per the Board\u2019s Chair, Jan O. Voss, P.Eng., PTOE: \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>After research into best practices across North America, as well as a detailed market and financial analysis, the board determined that there was a definitive need for this type of certification.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

TPCB is therefore pleased to announce the development of the new RSP2A: RSA Certified Professional designation, with a tentative launch date of early 2028.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

As a new credential within the Road Safety Professional (RSP) certification family, the RSP2A will function as the \u201cRSA Certified Professional\u201d designation, recognizing practitioners who demonstrate advanced skills in conducting and leading road safety audits and in applying the highest level of formal safety analysis.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

RSP2A will fall within the RSP2 family, but it will be a new certification pathway distinct from RSP2B and RSP2I. Requirements will be identical to those for RSP2B and RSP2I, including requiring RSP1 as a prerequisite. The RSP1 test will need to be passed before taking the RSP2A exam.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

When certificants pass the RSP2A, they will be able to state that they are road safety audit (RSA) professionals and that the certification validates their knowledge and experience in leading a team conducting a road safety audit<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Transportation Professional Certification Board was established in 1998 by a group of Canadian and American professionals to provide a mechanism to create and administer professional certifications for those involved in the practice of transportation.\u00a0 There are four certifications offered by TPCB. The <\/span>Professional Traffic Operations Engineers (PTOE)<\/b> certification exams are offered to professionals with expertise and experience in topics such as traffic operational analysis, traffic engineering studies, operational effects of geometric designs, traffic safety, traffic control devices, and social, environmental, and institutional issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Professional Transportation Planned (PTP) <\/b>certification exams are offered to professionals with expertise in topics such as land use and transportation analysis, needs assessment for short- and long-range planning, transportation system planning and evaluation, public policy, environmental analysis, and plan implementation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Road Safety Professional<\/b>, <\/span>Level 1,<\/b> (RSP<\/span>1<\/span>) certification exams are offered to professionals who have demonstrated proficiency in the foundations of road safety principles and make decisions or take actions that potentially impact the safety of the travelling public. This includes individuals in the engineering, motor vehicle, behavioural, law enforcement, policy development, and emergency response communities.\u00a0(<\/span>https:\/\/www.tpcb.org\/certification\/rsp1\/exam-format-and-content\/<\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Road Safety Professional, Level 2<\/b>, (RSP<\/span>2<\/span>) has two specialties: behavioural (RSP<\/span>2<\/span>B) and infrastructure (RSP<\/span>2<\/span>I). The certification exams are offered to professionals whose primary job functions are dedicated to improving the safety performance of the surface transportation system. This includes professionals responsible for developing and implementing engineering or behavioural programs aimed at reducing the number of fatalities and injuries due to road crashes.
