Abstract:<\/h2>\nBackground:<\/h3>\n
While there may be countless amount of research methods possible to help researchers in gathering data, there is a limit to how close one can get to reality, especially when researching on first responders.<\/p>\n
Aims:<\/h3>\n
The goal of this study is to test the efficiency of using a social media platform (Instagram) to gather usable and credible data on bike patrol police officers.<\/p>\n
Methods:<\/h3>\n
Using Instagram, a total of 200 images of bike patrol police officers were identified. Every publication was individually and subjectively analyzed, and information such as the type of Instagram account, the date the picture was published, and what police force posted was extracted to document bike patrol practices.<\/p>\n
Results:<\/h3>\n
Using 45 variables per image and more than 1200 words as search criteria, with a bit of tweaking, this new research method has a lot of potentials. This project provides a glimpse of what can be done in a research project using a social media platform.<\/p>\n
Discussion:<\/h3>\n
The use of Instagram helped us discover the advantages and disadvantages of using this kind of data since this research method is still new. These results make us reflect on whether these sources of information are efficient and how they should or can be used when conducting research n road safety. While there are still challenges on the practical side, the research potential embedded in this data is too significant to be ignored.<\/p>\n
Conclusions:<\/h3>\n
Social media platforms have a lot of potentials to be useful in a formal research context, especially when it comes to health and safety, more specifically with first responders.<\/p>\n
