Student Paper Competition

The CARSP Young Professionals Committee is excited to host the annual Student Paper Competition. Students actively registered in a Canadian University/College (including post-docs) can submit papers on any road safety topic. Authors of the top three papers will receive the following monetary awards:

  • $1000 for first place
  • $600 for second place
  • $400 for third place

Notes: Students must submit their paper abstract to the general call for abstracts (deadlines posted above). If accepted, you will be able to deliver an oral presentation at the conference and upload the full paper accompanying your work at a later date. The results of the paper competition will not affect your oral presentation status; you will present your work regardless of whether you win a paper award. Students must be the lead author of the work and present their paper in person via a slidedeck presentation to receive the monetary award. Details on past CARSP Conference Student Paper Competitions, including the topics chosen as previous winners, can be found here.

Papers should be written and formatted according to 2026 Conference requirements. Authors should indicate whether their paper falls within the Policy and Practice Stream or the Research and Evaluation Stream. In addition, student papers should follow these additional guidelines:

  1. Papers must be blinded and contain no author identifying information
  2. Papers should be submitted as a Microsoft Word document (not PDF)
  3. Underneath the title, please specify the following information (see sample below):
    1. Purpose of your research (e.g., undergraduate thesis, master’s thesis, doctoral thesis, research assistantship, etc.).
    2. Current level of study (e.g., undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, post-doctoral, etc.).
    3. Briefly state your contributions, who else was involved in the research (e.g., number of other students, faculty), and describe their roles (e.g., did they support project conceptualization, data collection, analysis, writing, reviewing/editing, etc.).
