Abstract

A series of pedestrian crash tests are performed as part of each IPTM (Institute of Police Technology and Management) Pedestrian/Bicycle Crash Investigation Course. During each testing session, test vehicles are driven toward a stationary test dummy that is either standing or positioned on a bicycle. The vehicle may be braking before or after impact, or not braking at all. The pre-impact location of the test dummy is marked and personnel are positioned to locate, mark and record the test dummy’s initial contact with the ground. Additional calculations compare the test dummy’s slide to stop speed to the pedestrian’s projectile speed. As part of each pedestrian crash test, a video camera is positioned on the impact side of the vehicle at 90 degrees to impact. The resulting video for each test is reviewed using computer software to estimate the pedestrian’s carry distance before the airborne phase commences. The methods used and the information collected from each test are provided for review. The results of these tests show what impact these variables play on investigating pedestrian-related collisions.
