Abstract
A coalition of vested stakeholders and organizations was established, based on the principles and goals as set forth in the Alberta Traffic Safety Plan and identifying a perceived need for an effective and wide ranging strategies. This coalition centered around a desire to help protect children and other vulnerable road users on our roadways, and together they worked on a program and campaign for bicycle safety that reached well in excess of 4500 children, in nine communities, in a two month period of time.
Though the theme of bicycle rodeos is far from new, working within the framework of the Alberta Traffic Safety Plan – Community Mobilization Strategy and the Aboriginal Traffic Safety Strategy enabled the development and implementation of community based traffic safety strategies that were far reaching in that it helped strengthen ties between communities and groups that otherwise would not have interacted. Community partnership and engagement based on collaboration, education, awareness, and enforcement provided the foundation for service delivery to nine very diverse communities, throughout south western Alberta and on Treaty 7 reserves.
