Abstract

In thirteen rollover collisions involving Ford F-350 Super Duty 4×4 crew cab pickups that were investigated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), it was observed that the pickup trucks all had similar damage profiles. Many of the roofs, A, B, and C pillars collapsed in the same manner almost to the belt line of the occupant compartment. Special consideration was given to the exposure of the occupants to injury as a result of roof crush intrusion. Regulatory efforts expected to reduce the incidence of rollovers and for increased occupant protection do not apply to pickup trucks with gross weight ratings over 4536 kg.
