Improving Cyclist Safety Through the Safe System Approach: Lessons from Collision Analysis

CARSP Webinar Series

Despite significant investment in cycling infrastructure across Canadian municipalities, cyclist safety outcomes continue to reflect complex interactions between roadway design, user behavior, and operational practices.

This webinar examines cyclist safety through an engineering and Safe System lens, drawing on collision trends, forensic engineering experience, and real-world examples of infrastructure performance. The presentation will highlight common deficiencies in the planning, design, and maintenance of cycling facilities, and how these deficiencies contribute to collision risk and injury severity. Key topics include facility selection, intersection design, surface conditions, temporary work zones, and the interaction between cyclists and other road users. The webinar will also demonstrate how cyclist safety is a shared responsibility among road authorities, policymakers, enforcement agencies, and road users.

Participants will gain practical insights into identifying safety risks in cycling infrastructure and improving outcomes through better design, maintenance practices, and system-level thinking consistent with Vision Zero principles.

CARSP webinars are free for CARSP members.  Webinar recordings are posted 1-2 days after the live webinar takes place.  They are immediately available to CARSP members, and after one month, to the general public.  Not a CARSP member, you have two options for viewing the webinar.
