• The Province of British Columbia has proclaimed May 2025 as Motorcycle Safety Awareness month.
• All road users share the responsibility of keeping each other safe.
• Motorcyclists need to know how to ride safely, from training to proper gear and following road rules.
• Other drivers need to safely share the road with motorcyclists.

Secondary Messages
• Spring and summer are when the most motorcycles are on the road, and when the highest
number of motorcycle-involved collisions and fatalities occur.
• Motorcyclists make up an outsized portion of collision fatalities, compared to their percentage
of total road users.

Fast Facts
• In 2023, there were 2,235 crashes and 38 fatal crashes in BC with at least one motorcycle
involved.
• On average from 2019-2023, five out of ten crashes involving a motorcycle in BC happened at
an intersection.
• Based on the Police Reported Crashes, the main contributing factors for motorcycle crashes
were distraction, weather conditions and speed.

As we wave goodbye to winter, make sure your bike is ready to hit the road. A quick check can keep you safe and save you money!

– Battery: charge it up and check its health.
– Tires: inspect for wear and proper inflation.
– Brakes: ensure pads and fluids are good to go.
– Fluids: refresh oil and coolant if needed.
– Lights: test all signals and headlights.
– Chain: clean and lubricate for a smooth ride. –  Tailpipe & Body: make sure nothing’s nesting in the exhaust and wipe off any debris
– Documents: double-check that your insurance and licence are valid.

A little prep goes a long way. Gear up for a great ride season! 🌞

Drivers: always check your mirrors and blind spots. Riders are harder to see but share the same road. Give them space and time.

Riders: wear visible gear, signal clearly, and ride within your skill. If it’s been a while, refresh your skills with ICBC’s *Tuning Up for Riders*.

As a driver, you can help keep motorcyclists safe with a few simple habits:

1. Look twice. Motorcycles have a smaller profile and can be harder to see. Always check carefully before turning or pulling out.
2. Riders can be hidden behind vehicles or roadside objects. A second look can save a life.
3. Signal early. Clear signals give motorcyclists time to adjust their speed or position.
4. Give space & stay patient. Leave room, especially when turning or changing lanes.
5. Approach intersections with caution. Slow down and be prepared to yield.
