Traffic Calming on Arterials: Why It Matters and How to Do It
CARSP Webinar Series
Date/Time
Date(s) - February 24, 2026
12:00 pm EST - 1:00 pm EST

While many municipalities have developed robust traffic calming tools for local and even collector streets, solutions available for arterials are often quite limited. Despite this, arterials are where the most severe collisions occur, suggesting that speed management is not just useful but necessary for achieving Vision Zero goals.
Drawing on a recent study by the Transportation Association of Canada and global best practices, this presentation will share:
- The importance of selecting a target speed for streets based on the street context, and how to think about speed at the network level
- The case for low-speed arterial roadways that operate at 30-40 km/h
- Tools and techniques specifically appropriate for arterials, especially those operating at 30-50 km/h
