The webinar will commence with an overview of Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS), including its rationale, purpose, and operation. The legal aspects of MAS, especially in terms of potential infringement on individual rights, will also be discussed. The value and importance of MAS will be discussed, along with preliminary evidence of its effectiveness in Canada and other countries. The webinar will conclude with the next steps being addressed, including the need for ongoing monitoring and evaluation.

Joanna Wells works as Senior Legal Counsel in the Criminal Law and Policy Section of Justice Canada, and has had carriage of the impaired driving file for over 10 years, during which time she has supported the Government in the enactment and implementation of reforms to the impaired driving regime in the Criminal Code.

Senior Research Associate, CSSA

Doug has dedicated his career to research on alcohol and drug-impaired driving, with an M.A.Sc. in Addiction Studies and a Ph.D. in Psychology. Working as a senior research associate and an independent researcher, he has contributed extensively to the field through publications and presentations worldwide. Recognized for his expertise, Doug has served on significant committees, received accolades like the DRE Ambassador and the Haddon Award, and was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals.
