Abstract

Shared spaces, characterised by an absence of traffic control and a focus on aesthetics, have seen steady growth throughout Europe and Oceania. Considered by opponents to be a radical departure from years of transportation engineering practice, these concepts seek to return roads to neighbourhoods and to their residents. Though existing laws create a safe and orderly flow of vehicles for arterials and freeways, the different purpose of local roads necessitates a different ruleset. This report provides a literature review and critique of the existing model as well as an exploration into the possibility of adoption in the United States and Canada. Two case studies are also examined where shared space outcomes have been established through restrictive traffic calming and disincentive, and through communal convention.
