Abstract

The construction of modern roundabouts is rapidly rising. There is limited knowledge in current guidelines or academic literatures on designing roundabouts that guarantee maximum safety. Studies have suggested that design features affect traffic operations at roundabouts, which in turn, affect safety performance. Based on existing research, this paper aims to explore more in depth, the relation between operational features, specifically, operating speed and safety performance. The final product of this paper is a pair of statistical models that can support the estimation of safety performance for a roundabout by linking design features, operational characteristics and collisions. The outcome of this paper forms the basis for a practical decision-making tool to design roundabouts from the perspective of safety issues.
