About the Role

The Region of Durham is seeking a Works Technician 5 (Traffic) to provide technical expertise and support for traffic signal control devices and intelligent transportation systems. This role involves electrical and electronic design, diagnostics, installation, and maintenance of traffic infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient roadway operations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to scheduled and emergency repairs for traffic signal systems and intelligent transportation systems
  • Inspect and implement work zone safety requirements
  • Perform testing and bench repair of electronic circuitry
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and upgrade centralized traffic control systems
  • Plan and organize materials, equipment, and work orders for daily operations
  • Install and construct traffic control devices, including poles, signal heads, wiring, and detection systems
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory, engineering, and quality control standards

Qualifications

  • Three-year diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology or Ontario Certificate of Qualification (309A Electrician)
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Level 1 & 2 Certification
  • Several years of relevant work experience
  • Strong knowledge of applicable standards and regulations (e.g., NEMA, Ontario Provincial Standards, OHSA, Ontario Traffic Control Manual Book 7)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and relevant traffic/vehicle detection and controller software
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Valid Ontario Class DZ Driver’s Licence

Compensation

CUPE 1764 – Salary Grade 9

  • Start: $55.63/hour
  • After 6 months: $58.72/hour
  • Job rate: $61.81/hour
