What’s Old is New Again: Using Science and Story to Advance Road Safety
Author(s): Bella Dinh-Zarr
Slidedeck Presentation:
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is an independent, non-regulatory U.S. agency charged with investigating transportation disasters in all modes and then issuing recommendations to prevent death and injury. The agency works on ways to address longstanding safety issues, such as speeding, alcohol-impaired driving, and occupant protection, while at the same time conducting new investigations, such as crashes involving automated vehicles and bicyclists. Using examples from the field, this presentation will describe the science, stories, and other tools used by the NTSB to advance its road safety recommendations, such as automated speed enforcement and .05 BAC, in the face of attacks by opponents of safety.
