Abstract:

Context:

According to the World Health Organization (2018), the world suffers approximately 1.3 million deaths from road crashes every year. 93% of global deaths are in LMICs and road deaths and injuries not only cost a country’s GDP but also hinder GDP growth over the years. The UN Sustainable Development Goals and Global Plan for the Decade of Action 2021-2030 set the global road safety target to reduce deaths and injuries by at least 50% by 2030.

Objectives:

The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety (the Alliance) together with its member NGOs are calling for investment in evidence-based actions and involvement of NGOs in decision making to achieve this global target.

Target Groups:

Africa as a region consists of many LMICs and suffers the largest deaths per capita in the world. The Alliance is leading two research projects with NGO and academic partners to help build local evidence to strengthen advocacy and NGO influence in the delivery of road safety results in African LMICs. This presentation will provide the rationales for and examples of NGOs helping to achieve death and injury reductions in LMICs.
