Impaired Driving
Based on the Ontario Road Safety Annual Report for 2021, impaired driving by drugs or alcohol continues to remain the leading cause of death on Ontario roads.
Compared to the previous year,
- drinking and driving fatalities are down 2% from 98 to 96, and
- drugs other than alcohol fatalities are up by 12% from 77 to 86.
Some good news, Ontario’s drinking and driving fatality rate in 2021 was 0.08 per 10,000 licensed drivers, a reduction of 89% from 0.72 in 1988.
With enforcement partners across the province currently running their Festive R.I.D.E. campaigns, Ontario will see thousands of charges laid and hundreds of drivers removed from the roads over the holiday season.
Winter Driving
Did You Know? It’s winter-rated tire season here in Ontario? As temperatures reach a consistent 7ºC or lower, that’s when our summer or all-season tires start to get stiff and lose traction.
Most Ontarians use a winter-rated tire as it can decrease stopping distance by up to 25%.
Studded tires are allowed only in Northern Ontario between October 1st and April 30th . They are permitted for vehicles with an ownership address in Northern Ontario, as defined by the Territorial Districts of Algoma, Cochrane, Kenora, Manitoulin, Nipissing, Parry Sound, Rainy River, Sudbury, Thunder Bay and Temiskaming.
Snowmobile Safety
Snowmobiling is a popular winter activity in Ontario. You can have a safe and fun ride if you know how to operate your snowmobile and prepare for your trip. With the arrival of snow, now is a good time to remind riders about staying on the trail, wearing the gear, and always riding sober.
